When Border 2 hit theatres last weekend, it wasn’t just another release but a journey back in time for fans who had grown up with J. P. Dutta’s 1997 classic Border.
Nearly three decades after the original film celebrated the courage and humanity of Indian soldiers in a way few war movies had before, audiences were understandably eager to see if the sequel could live up to that legacy.
With Sunny Deol returning to lead the cast, joined by Varun Dhawan, Ahan Shetty, and Diljit Dosanjh, Border 2 has delivered both the adrenaline of war and the heart of the story fans remembered and loved.
The film gave viewers a heartfelt surprise during the end credits, bringing back Suniel Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Puneet Issar, and Sudesh Berry to honour the characters who lost their lives in the original.
That small but poignant tribute quickly went viral, with fans sharing their emotional reactions online. It was a reminder of why Border has remained so special in the hearts of audiences for decades.
Among these cameos, Akshaye Khanna’s appearance created a particular buzz. After his recent role in Dhurandhar, fans had been speculating for weeks about a possible cameo, but there was never any confirmation — which made the end-credits reveal all the more exciting.
In the scene, Sunny Deol’s character, Fateh Singh Kaler, pauses to remember the soldiers who gave their lives for the nation, a moment that blends reverence, nostalgia, and emotion beautifully.
Despite online speculation that the cameo had been added to capitalise on Akshaye Khanna’s newfound hype from Dhurandhar, the makers were quick to clarify that the tribute was always part of the script.
Speaking to News 18, co-producer Bhushan Kumar said, “You can’t make a film like that. It was already scripted. In fact, we shot his portion after Dhurandhar released. The hysteria of the film and Akshaye was already there but we never thought of [profiting from] it. It was never required in the script. It’s not like we added him after Dhurandhar released.”
Director Anurag Singh added, “We shot his part on December 10-11. Akshaye is in Border 2 as a tribute to Border. He was a part of the story from the very beginning. And those who stay back after the film ends will get the golden nugget.”
