In a major shake-up for Indian television, legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan is reportedly stepping down as the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) after helming the iconic quiz show for over two decades. Since its inception in 2000, Big B has been the face of KBC, except for the third season, which was hosted by Shah Rukh Khan. However, recent reports suggest that the 81-year-old megastar is exiting the show due to personal reasons, leaving fans both surprised and nostalgic.
While Sony TV has yet to confirm the development, speculation is rife that Salman Khan might replace Big B as the new host for Season 17.
A report from Bollywood Hungama claimed that the ‘Bhaijaan’ of Bollywood – Salman Khan is in advanced discussions with the showrunners. If things go as planned, the superstar — known for his dominance on the small screen with Bigg Boss — will bring a fresh energy to the long-running show.
Industry insiders believe Salman Khan’s widespread appeal, especially in India’s heartland, could make him a compelling successor to Big B. A source quoted in the report stated, “Salman is the king of the small screen and has a strong connect with the audience in smaller centres. If everything goes well, he could take the show by storm.”

Interestingly, just a few weeks prior, Sony TV had released a promotional video on April 4 featuring Amitabh Bachchan, hinting at his return. The promo showed him as a patient with a stomachache, playfully suggesting the return of the show and encouraging fans to register via SonyLIV. Yet, the contradiction between this promo and the current reports raises questions about the final decision.
If Salman Khan indeed replaces Amitabh Bachchan, the transition will be closely watched by fans. While Big B’s towering presence and gravitas have become synonymous with KBC, Salman Khan’s charisma and mass appeal might attract a new generation of viewers.
KBC Season 17 is expected to premiere in August 2025, but for now, all eyes are on Sony TV for an official announcement.
