Goddess Gangamma Thalli

In Hindu mythology, Gangamma Thalli is revered as the sister of Lord Venkateshwara Balaji and is believed to safeguard the region from harm.

Tirupati Gangamma Jatara celebrations

The Tirupati Gangamma Jatara is an annual folk festival held between the first and second weeks of May, attracting devotees from all over India to pray to Goddess Gangamma.

Following this, the sound of dappus (traditional drums) fills the streets, signaling the start of the festival and urging locals to stay in the town until the event concludes.

The celebrations take place at the Tataiahgunta Gangamma Temple in Tirupati, where priests initiate the festivities with a ritual. The festivities starts with Chatimpu at midnight which acts as an official beginning for the celebrations that continues for a week. It begins with the playing of musical instruments.

The next day, Banda Vesham ritual starts, where devotees apply kumkum paste and tie colorful ribbons around their heads. This is followed by Thoti Vesham, where participants cover themselves with charcoal and wear garlands made of neem leaves.
