Kareena Kapoor Khan and Bipasha Basu catfight details from the sets of Ajnabee

Bipasha Basu made her Bollywood debut with the film Ajnabee, which also starred Kareena Kapoor. During the shoot of the film, tensions between the two actresses led to a feud, which Bipasha later discussed on Koffee With Karan in 2005. Recently, in a conversation with Siddharth Kannan, actress Amita Nangia, who was also part of the film, shed light on the reason behind their tiff.

Amita explained, “I think it was something related to their costumes. They both wanted the same designer.” When asked whether the conflict between Bipasha and Kareena had an impact on others on set, Amita responded, “What could we say? We would hear about it on set and react to it. It was their debut.”

Ajnabee marked Bipasha’s debut and it was Kareena’s fourth film in her career.

Reflecting on her interactions with the actresses, Amita shared, “I couldn’t relate to Kareena because she was very reserved, and her mother was always with her. We couldn’t bond with her. But we were friendly—we would sit together and talk.”

She also described Bipasha as “very new and completely focused on herself,” adding that she wasn’t particularly friendly during the early days of the shoot.

Bipasha, speaking about her relationship with Kareena on Koffee With Karan in 2005, revealed that it was only during the second schedule of the film that she realised Kareena didn’t like her. “It was only in the second schedule that I realised that she does not like me. She stopped talking to me. It doesn’t make my life difficult, because when you know that somebody is very clear with their thoughts, that I don’t like you and I’m not going to talk to you, it’s actually better for me. Because I hate hypocrites.”

She continued, “I would rather have a person who’s very straight in front of me, saying, ‘Listen, something’s not right with us, we’ll not talk’. But we worked professionally absolutely okay when we had scenes together, there was no tantrum, there were no problems as such,” Bipasha explained, emphasizing that their professional interactions were smooth despite the personal tension.

After Ajnabee, Bipasha and Kareena crossed paths again in Omkara, but interestingly, they didn’t share any scenes together. This ongoing professional rivalry and the differing personalities of the actresses highlight the dynamics on set during their early years in Bollywood.
