Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, known for his outspoken remarks, recently criticised AR Rahman’s unorthodox working style, calling it “unsystematic.” The two collaborated only once for the song Ae Nazneen Suno Na from Dil Hi Dil Mein. In an interview with Bollywood Thikana, Abhijeet recounted the experience, expressing frustration over delays and Rahman’s rumoured preference for late-night recordings.
Abhijeet shared that while he was a busy playback singer receiving calls from top composers like Anu Malik and Jatin-Lalit, his experience with Rahman stood out for the wrong reasons. He recalled being summoned to the studio at 2 am, despite having requested a morning session. “At 2 am, I get a call summoning me to the studio. Am I crazy? I said that I was asleep. I went in the morning, but he was not there. They don’t have the habit of working at regular hours. I’m used to working in a systematic manner. Now, in the name of creativity, if you say that you will record at 3:33 am, I don’t get it,” he said.
The singer revealed that Rahman wasn’t present during the recording. Instead, one of Rahman’s assistants oversaw the session, which left Abhijeet dissatisfied. He credited the success of the song to Rahman but added, “An artiste doesn’t become big or small by doing these things.”

This isn’t the first time Abhijeet has criticised Rahman’s methods. In an earlier interview, he referred to Rahman’s process as “unmusical” while discussing a near collaboration for Rangeela. He claimed that Rahman was merely “recording patches,” which felt disconnected from the traditional music-making process.
AR Rahman, an Oscar-winning composer known for his experimental approach and innovative soundtracks, has often faced polarising opinions about his working style.
