Veteran actor Aamir Khan recently talked about why his film Laapataa Ladies wasn't able to take it to oscars.
The PK actor is, renowned for his understanding of what it takes for a film to succeed at the Oscars, as his film Lagaan made the top five in the Best Foreign Film category. Since then, India has come close but hasn’t replicated that success.
This year, there was hope when Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, was chosen as India’s official entry, but despite the anticipation, the film failed to make it to the Oscars’ shortlist, leaving many disappointed.
At a recent event organised by ABP Network, Aamir Khan addressed the film’s omission and whether anything had gone wrong with its selection. Aamir, with his usual candour, said, “It was a beautiful film, and there was no shortage on fronts.”
He pointed out that nearly every country submits its best film for consideration, and that there were around 80-85 entries from across the world this time. "Everyone sends in their best film, right? In fact, this category has the toughest competition in the Oscars," Aamir explained.
Aamir also acknowledged the subjective nature of film appreciation, noting that getting into the Oscars is often based on the tastes of the selection panel.
He added, “Honestly, we have to understand that there are other language films that might have been genuinely better, or let me put it this way… films that the members liked better. It doesn’t mean we weren’t good… and it just means the members liked the other films better than ours. This is a very subjective decision."
He further illustrated his point with a comparison: “Okay, now you tell me which is the better film between Mother India and Mughal-e-Azam? Which film had better acting? How would you compare? That’s why I am saying it is all subjective."

For Aamir, the selection process for the Oscars is deeply personal and difficult, as filmmaking itself is an art that varies from person to person. "These are very personal choices, and very difficult to choose. So, don’t take it too seriously."
Laapataa Ladies, a film blending humour with social commentary, tells the story of two women who mysteriously go missing in a small town, leading to chaos and confusion. Though it did not make it to the shortlist, Aamir's reflections remind us that the Oscars selection process is complex and subjective, and that artistic merit is often in the eye of the beholder.
