The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will close the registration window for the Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2026 today, providing candidates with their final opportunity to apply for 933 prestigious positions across India's top administrative services.
Interested and eligible candidates who have not yet submitted their applications can complete the process by visiting the official UPSC website at upsc.gov.in or upsconline.nic.in. The deadline ends today, February 24, marking the culmination of the application period for one of the country's most competitive examinations.
Vacancy Breakdown and Exam Schedule
This year's notification announces 933 vacancies across various services, representing a slight decrease from the 979 positions advertised in 2025. The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination is scheduled for May 24, 2026, serving as the gateway for recruitment to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and other Group 'A' and Group 'B' Central Services.
Additionally, the UPSC Indian Forest Service (IFoS) Examination 2026 will recruit 80 officers. Notably, the preliminary examination for both CSE and IFoS will be common, requiring Forest Service aspirants to clear the same Prelims paper.
Four Key Changes in UPSC CSE 2026
The Commission has introduced significant reforms this year aimed at streamlining the selection process and maintaining examination integrity:
1. Restrictions on In-Service Candidates
In a landmark decision, UPSC has barred candidates already serving in IAS or IFS from appearing in CSE 2026. The new provisions state:
2. One-Time Rank Improvement Opportunity for IPS/Central Service Officers
The Commission has introduced a structured one-time opportunity for officers seeking career improvement:
3. Reduced Timeline for Question Paper Objections
UPSC has streamlined the objection process by reducing the deadline for filing challenges to question papers and answer keys from seven days to five days following the Preliminary examination. This change aims to accelerate the evaluation timeline and result declaration process.
4. Mandatory Face Authentication with AI Technology
Starting from 2026, all candidates appearing for UPSC recruitment examinations, including Civil Services, will undergo compulsory face authentication at examination centers. The system employs Artificial Intelligence (AI) to conduct "face tests," ensuring faster verification compared to manual processes. This technological intervention specifically targets:
Enhanced Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities
In a progressive move, UPSC will now allocate preferred examination centers to candidates with disabilities. This facility ensures that differently-abled candidates can choose centers most convenient for their specific requirements, reducing travel-related challenges.
Educational Qualification:
Age Limit (as on August 1, 2026):
Minimum: 21 years
Maximum: 32 years (born not before August 2, 1994, and not after August 1, 2005)
Age relaxation: OBC - 3 years, SC/ST - 5 years, PwBD - 10 years
Application Fee and Process
Candidates are required to pay an application fee of ₹100, payable through online modes (NetBanking, Credit/Debit Card) or cash at any State Bank of India branch. However, female candidates, SC/ST candidates, and persons with benchmark disabilities are exempted from fee payment.
Important Note: UPSC has clarified that applications once submitted cannot be withdrawn, emphasizing the need for careful consideration before final submission.
Selection Process
The selection process follows the traditional three-stage structure:
Preliminary Examination (Objective type) - Screening test
Main Examination (Written, 1750 marks) - Qualification for interview
Personality Test (Interview, 275 marks) - Final merit determination
The final ranking combines Mains and interview performance, determining allocation to various services, including IAS, IPS, IFS, Railway Group 'A' (Indian Railway Accounts Service), Indian Postal Service, Indian Trade Service, and numerous other central services.
With the clock ticking down to midnight, aspiring civil servants are urged to complete their applications without delay to secure their chance at shaping India's administrative future.
