Due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, heavy rainfall has been lashing districts such as Chennai, Thiruvarur, and Cuddalore since last night. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that the low-pressure system, which originated in the southeastern Bay of Bengal, has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area. It is expected to move west-northwestward toward the Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coast in the next 24 hours.
The IMD has clarified that there is no likelihood of this system intensifying into a cyclone. However, it has predicted light to moderate rain in many areas across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. In districts like Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, and Pudukottai, isolated places could witness heavy to very heavy rainfall today.
School Closures Announced
In light of the heavy rainfall, school holidays have been declared in 19 districts, including Chennai, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Thiruvarur, Kanchipuram, Ariyalur, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Thiruvallur, Karur, Vellore, Thoothukudi, and Tirupattur.
In Tirunelveli district, only students from grades 1 to 5 have been granted a holiday. Headmasters have been given the authority to decide on holidays for the remaining grades based on local weather conditions and examination schedules.
Additionally, schools and colleges in Puducherry, Karaikal, and Tiruvannamalai have also been closed due to the adverse weather.
