  • Mehriban Aliyeva became Azerbaijan's first woman Vice President
  • Similar power couples have led Argentina and Nicaragua

You might think this is a trick question or something from a movie plot. But in the world of global politics, truth can be stranger than fiction! There is indeed a nation where the husband is the President and his wife holds the powerful office of Vice President. Intrigued? Let’s get into this fascinating story.

The country is Azerbaijan, a nation located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. In 2017, President Ilham Aliyev appointed his wife, Mehriban Aliyeva, as the Vice President of the country. This move created a unique chapter in modern political history.

How Did This Happen?

President: Ilham Aliyev became the President of Azerbaijan in 2003, succeeding his father.

New Post: Before 2017, Azerbaijan did not have the post of Vice President. President Aliyev created this position, stating it was for better governance.

Historic Appointment: He then appointed his wife, Mehriban Aliyeva, to this newly created, powerful role. This made her the first woman Vice President in Azerbaijan's history.

Who is Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva?

She is much more than just the President’s wife. She is a qualified ophthalmologist (an eye specialist). Even before becoming VP, she was a well-known public figure. She heads the influential Heydar Aliyev Foundation, which works on national development projects, and the Azerbaijan Culture Friends Foundation.

She is very active on social media, especially Instagram (with over 1 million followers), and she uses the platform to share updates on national projects and initiatives.

While Azerbaijan’s current setup is unique today, history has seen similar power couples:

Argentina: In the 1970s, President Juan Perón had his wife, Isabel Perón, as his Vice President. After his death, she became the President.

Nicaragua: Since 2017, President Daniel Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo, have been serving as President and Vice President of Nicaragua, respectively.

So, Did You Guess It Right?

The combination of a husband and wife leading a country as President and Vice President is a rare political phenomenon. It blurs the lines between family, governance and power in a way that captures global attention.
