All schools and colleges in Manipur will remain shut today, 17 September, following continuous heavy rainfall and flooding across the state. The decision, announced by the state government, aims to ensure the safety of students and staff as weather conditions continue to worsen.
Rivers Overflow, Farmland and Homes FloodedOn Sunday night, two rivers in the Imphal Valley, Wangjing and Iril breached their embankments, flooding large areas of farmland and residential zones. The Iril river overflowed at Kshetrigao in Imphal East, submerging homes, roads, and agricultural land. Meanwhile, the Wangjing river crossed the danger mark, affecting Sangaiyumpham and Wangjing areas in Thoubal district.
A relief camp set up at Wangjing Kodompokpi Sports Complex was also badly waterlogged, limiting its ability to support displaced residents.
Landslides and Infrastructure DamageThe Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) reported that continuous rainfall has triggered landslides in several districts, damaging roads, houses, and farmland. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast further rainfall over the next two days, raising concerns about more disruption.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal has issued an urgent circular due to rising water levels inside and around the hospital campus. All current inpatients are being evacuated from hospital wards, and new admissions have been suspended until further notice.
Authorities are monitoring the situation and have urged residents to stay alert and follow official advisories.
