Air Force Day 2025: India observes Air Force Day every year on 8 October to mark the foundation of the Indian Air Force (IAF). In 2025, the country celebrates the 93rd Air Force Day on Wednesday, 8 October, honouring the service, dedication, and courage of IAF personnel.

Indian Air Force Day 2025 Theme

This year’s theme focuses on the IAF’s contribution to Operation Sindoor, as reported by ANI. The day will feature grand events, including a farewell tribute to the iconic MiG-21, and a flypast showcasing aircraft such as the Rafale, Su-30MKI, C-17 Globemaster, C-130J Super Hercules, Apache Guardian, Netra AEW&C, and the Tiranga Formation finale.

The main parade will be held at Hindon Air Base, one of India’s largest and most important airbases. The event will include air shows, exhibitions, and ceremonial displays that highlight the IAF’s technological progress and operational readiness. While the parade takes place at Hindon, the flypast is expected in Guwahati in mid-November.

History of Indian Air Force Day

The Indian Air Force was established on 8 October 1932 during British rule, originally known as the Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF). The RIAF conducted its first operational flight on 1 April 1933, with six RAF-trained officers and 19 Havai Sepoys.

The RIAF played a key role during World War II and received the title “Royal” in 1945 in recognition of its service. After India gained independence in 1947 and became a republic in 1950, the prefix “Royal” was dropped, and the force was officially renamed the Indian Air Force.

Significance of Indian Air Force Day

Air Force Day celebrates the contribution and achievements of IAF personnel, who have played an essential role in protecting India’s airspace and national security. The IAF has been a major part of several key military operations, including the Indo-Pak wars of 1947, 1965, 1971, and 1999, the 1962 war with China, and Operation Poomalai (1987) and Operation Safed Sagar (1999).

Beyond defence, the IAF also takes part in humanitarian missions and disaster relief operations, both within India and abroad. Over the decades, it has transformed from a small unit with limited resources into the fourth largest air force in the world.
