  • Girls' hostels to be built in every district for women's higher education

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget for the year 2026-27 in Parliament today. This year's budget has a strong focus on the education sector, with several important announcements aimed at preparing students for the future. The main goal is to better connect what is taught in schools and colleges with the skills needed for jobs and new businesses. The plans include forming a new committee for jobs, building new educational towns, and supporting girl students.

1. New Committee to Bridge Study and Jobs

A new high-powered committee called ‘Education to Employment and Enterprise’ will be formed. Its main job is to create a plan to make India a top country in service industries like IT, tourism, and finance by 2047. The committee will study how new technologies, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), will change the kinds of jobs available. It will then recommend what new skills students should learn to get those jobs.

2. A New Design Institute for Eastern India

A new National Institute of Design (NID) will be opened in eastern India. It will be set up through a “challenge route.” This means different places in the eastern region can apply, and the best location will be chosen. This institute will help meet the growing need for designers in the country and bring high-quality design education to a new part of India.

3. Five New University Hubs Near Factories and Highways

The government will help states build five new “university townships.” These will be located near major industrial areas and transport corridors. Each township will have a mix of universities, colleges, skill centres, and hostels in one place. The idea is to bring students closer to where the industries are, making it easier for them to find work after their studies.

4. One Girls’ Hostel in Every District

To make higher education safer and more accessible for women, the budget promises to build one girls’ hostel in every district. This is especially helpful for girls studying science and technology (STEM) subjects, who often have to spend long hours in labs and libraries. The hostels will be built with government funding to support these students.

5. Upgrading Telescopes to Boost Space Science

To encourage the study of space, stars and planets, the government will upgrade or build four major telescope facilities. These include solar telescopes, an infrared telescope, and a new planetarium. This move will give Indian scientists and students better tools for research and help create interest in the field of astronomy.

Overall, the 2026 budget for education focuses on practical learning, building new facilities and making sure all students, especially girls, have the support they need to succeed.
