9 Indian edtech companies with post-money valuation over Rs 2,000 crore

Ed-tech start-ups from Educomp to Byju's may have been in the news for the wrong reasons, but the education business is thriving. A quick look at 9 edtechs with post-money valuation of over Rs 2,000 crore.

Education technology or edtech companies have reshaped the way education is offered in India. From launching curated courses for professionals to offering immersive learning sessions for K-12 students and government examinations, edtech has come a long way. Although a few rough patches have troubled some companies (Arjun Mohan stepped down from his role as BYJU'S CEO earlier this week, for instance) here is a list of the largest edtechs that have post-money valuation of over Rs 2,000 crore, based on data shared with Moneycontrol by PrivateCircle Research, a private market intelligence platform.

Post-money valuation is the estimated worth of a company and represents the company's overall valuation after the infusion of new capital.

Unacademy 

Sorting Hat Technologies or Unacademy, provides an online learning platform for preparation of various competitive tests and the company was last valued at Rs 20,656 crore as of August 17, 2021.

It was founded in 2015 by Gaurav Munjal, Roman Saini and Hemesh Singh. SoftBank-backed Unacademy turned cash flow positive in the April-June quarter of 2023.

upGrad

UpGrad Education, under the name of upGrad, provides Post Graduate Diploma programs (PGPs), Masters degrees, and certificate courses in various fields like Data Science, Digital Marketing, Management, and Entrepreneurship.

As of November 3, 2023, it was valued at Rs 13,519 crore.

Allen Career Institute

Allen Career Institute, popularly known as ‘ALLEN’, offers Classroom Courses, Distance Learning Courses, and Online Courses. It has a pan-India presence and has multiple divisions.

Allen Career Institute was valued at Rs 9,576 crore as of July 1, 2022.

PhysicsWallah

Founded in 2020 by Alakh Pandey, PhysicsWallah (PW) started as a YouTube channel in 2014 and became a unicorn in 2022. It has more than 27 lakh paid students. To be sure, the firm has seen its share of problems in the past two years with teachers quitting over allegations of briberylayoffs announced in 2023 even as revenue jumped 340 percent.

As of June 7, 2022, the startup was valued at Rs 8,544 crore.

Vedantu

Vedantu Innovations, operating under the brand name of Vedantu, reported a valuation of Rs 6,626 crore as of December 19, 2022.

Vedantu offers an online learning platform where students can pick from a pool of teachers and learn from them via live interactive classes. In 2022, the startup opened its first hybrid learning centre branded as 'Vedantu Learning Center' in Muzaffarpur.

Unext Learning

With a valuation of Rs 4,450 crore on April 23, 2022, Unext Learning is an online learning organisation focused on the higher education and workforce learning ecosystem.

It offers the platform for online courses, digital and online assessments and student engagement tools.

Simplilearn

Founded in 2010 and based in San Francisco, California, and Bangalore, Simplilearn is a Blackstone portfolio company and an online bootcamp for digital economy skills training.

Its valuation stands at Rs 4,147 crore as of November 18, 2022. The bootcamps are designed and delivered with universities, corporations, and industry bodies via live online classes featuring industry practitioners, trainers, and leaders.

K12 Techno 

K12 Techno Services, operating as K12 Techno, offers academic services to schools.  Incorporated in 2010, its primary investors include Kedaara Capital, Peak XV (formerly Sequoia Capital India) and Navneet Learning.

As of September 11, 2023, the valuation was recorded at Rs 3,516 crore.

BrightCHAMPS

Brightchamps Tech or BrightCHAMPS is a live-learning edtech platform for kids from 6 to 16 years focused on general life skills such as Coding, Financial Literacy, Communication Skills and Robotics.

It offers services in around 30 countries in 12-plus languages across its four verticals. BrightCHAMPS has a valuation of Rs 2,682 crore as of July 5, 2022.
