  • India will celebrate its 77th Republic Day on 26 January 2026.
  • The count starts from 1950, the year the Constitution came into effect.
  • Republic Day marks the Constitution's adoption and is celebrated across the nation.

As 26 January 2026 approaches, many people across the country are asking a common question: will India celebrate its 77th or 78th Republic Day this year? This confusion comes up almost every year, especially on social media and during school discussions. However, the answer is clear once the counting method is understood.

India became a republic on 26 January 1950, when the Constitution of India came into force. This historic moment marked the beginning of India functioning as a sovereign democratic republic. The day has been observed as Republic Day every year since then.

The year 1950 is counted as the first Republic Day, not the zeroth year. This is where most of the confusion arises. Many people mistakenly think the count should start from the next year, but officially, the year the Constitution came into effect is considered the first celebration.

There is a simple way to calculate the Republic Day number. The formula is:

Republic Day number = Year – 1949

When this formula is applied to 2026:

2026 – 1949 = 77

This means that 26 January 2026 will mark India’s 77th Republic Day, not the 78th.

To put this into perspective, India celebrated its 75th Republic Day in 2024 and its 76th Republic Day in 2025. Since only one year passes between each celebration, the count increases by one each year. Following this sequence, the 2026 celebration naturally becomes the 77th.

Republic Day is celebrated to honour the Constitution of India, which replaced the Government of India Act, 1935, as the country’s governing document. Dr B R Ambedkar played a key role in drafting the Constitution, which lays down the framework for India’s political system, rights, duties, and governance.

Every year, the main Republic Day celebrations are held in New Delhi, with the grand parade taking place along Kartavya Path. The President of India presides over the event and unfurls the national flag. The parade showcases India’s defence strength, cultural diversity, and achievements, while states present tableaux highlighting their heritage and progress.

Apart from the national capital, Republic Day is also celebrated across states, districts, schools, and institutions. Flag hoisting ceremonies, cultural programmes, and discussions on the Constitution are organised to mark the occasion.
