  • Wedding called off after bride's statement; court to record her testimony

A wedding between two police constables in Meerut was called off after the bride-to-be went missing just a night before the ceremony, after the bride eloped with her lover, who is a history-sheeter.

The woman, 25-year-old Sandhya Bhardwaj, disappeared from her house in Akbarpur Sadat village in Meerut’s Bahsuma area on Saturday night. Her family had completed all preparations for her wedding to Atul Sharma, a constable posted in Muzaffarnagar, and invitations had already been sent out.

When Bhardwaj could not be found, her father, Subhash Sharma, approached the police on Sunday and alleged that his daughter had been abducted by Ankit Chauhan, a 28-year-old history-sheeter. Based on his complaint, police registered an FIR under sections related to kidnapping and criminal intimidation.

In his complaint, Sharma claimed that Chauhan had earlier threatened the groom over the phone. “On February 5, Chauhan called the groom and said he would kill him if he married my daughter. On Saturday night, he abducted her,” Sharma was quoted by The Times of India.

Police launched a search and traced Bhardwaj within eight hours to Buxar, in Meerut district. However, during questioning, Bhardwaj denied being kidnapped and told police that she had left her home willingly.

According to the police, Bhardwaj said she had known Chauhan for several years. Investigators said she met him during visits to her aunt’s house in Dhikoli village, which is Chauhan’s native place. Mawana Circle Officer Pankaj Lavania said the woman insisted that she had made the decision on her own.

Police confirmed that Chauhan has a criminal history, with at least nine cases registered against him, including charges of robbery and murder. He was arrested last year after a police encounter in connection with a liquor shop robbery and was recently released on bail.

Following Bhardwaj’s statement, the groom’s family decided to call off the wedding. Senior Superintendent of Police (Rural) Abhijeet Kumar said the woman would be produced before a court to record her statement formally.
