A man allegedly killed his wife and two young daughters following a dispute related to his wife not wearing a burqa in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli, police said on Wednesday. The bodies of the three victims were later found buried in a seven-foot-deep pit in the courtyard of their house.

The accused has been identified as Farooq, a resident of Garhi village under the Kandhla police station area, Mathrubhumi reported.

According to the police, Farooq shot his wife, Tahira (32), after an argument that began when she visited her parents’ home without wearing a burqa. When their daughters Afreen (14) and Sehreem (7) saw the incident, he allegedly killed them as well.

Police officials said the couple had been facing frequent arguments for several months. Farooq was also living separately from his parents, Dawood and Asgari, due to ongoing family disputes. The couple had five children in total, three of whom survived as they were not present at the time of the incident.

The crime came to light after Tahira and the two girls went missing for six days. Farooq’s father approached the police after receiving unclear and suspicious replies from his son about their whereabouts. During questioning, Farooq allegedly confessed to the crime.

Superintendent of Police N P Singh said the murders took place on the night of December 9-10. Farooq allegedly woke his wife under the excuse of making tea and then shot her and the elder daughter. The younger daughter was allegedly strangled after she saw what had happened.

Police said the accused had planned the crime in advance. He dug a deep pit in the courtyard, buried the bodies, and covered the spot with bricks. The bodies were later recovered and sent for post-mortem examination.

Farooq allgedly told investigators that financial stress, frequent arguments, and feelings of anger and humiliation led him to commit the crime. Further investigation is ongoing.
