A tragic road accident near Siri Fort in south Delhi early Wednesday claimed the lives of a cab driver and a passenger, while another occupant remains critically injured. The crash took place around 4.20 am on August Kranti Marg, police said.
The deceased have been identified as cab driver Girja Lal Bharadwaj (43) and passenger Ranjeet (30). The third occupant, Sumit (20), is battling for life at the AIIMS Trauma Centre.

Bharadwaj’s family said the accident has left them shattered, as his younger son has been in a coma for the past few years following another road accident. Deepak, the elder son, said his father was the sole breadwinner of the family and had been struggling to manage medical expenses.
“My brother Vishal has been in a coma since a road accident a few years ago. It was my father who took care of all his treatment and our household expenses,” Deepak was quoted by TOI as saying. The family lives in Khichripur in east Delhi.
Police said Ranjeet and his relative Sumit, both dhol players, were returning home to Lajpat Nagar after finishing work. They had hired a cab from the Hauz Khas area. As the cab was taking a right turn towards Balbir Saxena Marg, a car coming from the Panchsheel flyover side allegedly rammed into it at high speed.
“The car was travelling from Panchsheel flyover towards Andrews Ganj when it hit the cab,” a police officer said. There were three people inside the cab at the time of the accident.
All the injured were rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where doctors declared Bharadwaj and Ranjeet brought dead. Sumit remains in critical condition, doctors said.
The force of the collision completely mangled the cab, with bloodstains found inside the vehicle. The front portion of the other car was also badly damaged. At the accident spot, police found a damaged traffic signal and a gas connection pole. A broken windscreen and blood were also seen on the road.
The driver of the car, identified as Krishansh Kapoor (21), a resident of Udai Park, was apprehended from the spot. He told police that he was returning home after meeting a friend in Panchsheel Park when the accident occurred.
A senior police officer said Kapoor is an MBA student and the car involved in the crash is registered in the name of his mother, a retired teacher. “Initial findings suggest the car was being driven at high speed,” the officer was quoted by TOI as saying.
Police have registered a case and are investigating the case.
