Two sisters have been arrested for allegedly killing their 60-year-old father while he was asleep at their home in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district, police said.

The accused are aged 16 and 32. According to police, the sisters had been upset for years over what they described as discriminatory behaviour by their father, a farmer, according to a report in TOI. They allegedly told investigators that he favoured his son and treated his daughters differently and often scolded and taunted them for remaining unmarried, staying at home, and not working.

Police said the sisters had been planning the murder for several days. On Sunday night, they allegedly mixed sedatives into the family’s food and served it to all members, including their mother. After the family members fell asleep, the sisters carried out the attack.

According to the police, the younger sister held their father’s legs tightly while the elder sister slit his throat with a kitchen knife. The man’s body was discovered early Monday morning lying in a pool of blood inside the house.

Police were informed soon after and reached the spot. The body was sent for post-mortem examination. Within two hours of starting the investigation, officers detained both daughters for questioning. During interrogation, they allegedly confessed to the crime.

"During questioning, the two daughters stated that they were distressed over their father's behaviour towards them, and alleged that he treated his son and daughters differently. They also said he frequently scolded them and taunted them for staying at home, remaining unmarried and not doing any work,” SP (rural) Aditya Bansal was quoted by The Times of India as saying.

A case has been registered under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Bhopa police station. The two accused were formally arrested and later produced before a court, which remanded them to judicial custody.

Police said they recovered two strips of sleeping pills believed to have been used in the crime, along with the kitchen knife allegedly used in the murder. Blood-stained clothes belonging to the elder sister were also found hidden in a pile of fodder on the property.
