A series of major avalanches have swept through mountainous regions of Jammu and Kashmir over the past two days, burying structures and triggering widespread disruption amid severe winter weather. While officials have confirmed no loss of life, the incidents have sparked panic and stranded hundreds of tourists.

The latest event occurred on Wednesday in the remote Warwan valley of Kishtwar district. According to initial reports from district authorities, the avalanche descended from upper reaches during heavy snowfall, burying grazing areas and seasonal shelters used by locals. The administration has advised residents to avoid avalanche-prone zones as conditions remain treacherous.

This followed a high-intensity avalanche that struck the popular tourist destination of Sonamarg on Tuesday night. Officials stated the avalanche hit at 10.12 pm, sending a massive volume of snow towards homes and hotels.

Closed-circuit television footage from the area depicted the snowstorm advancing and engulfing buildings in its path. Despite the scale of the incident, which officials acknowledged had significant impact, no casualties or injuries were reported from either location.

The avalanches are part of a broader bout of severe weather affecting the region. Over the past two days, most parts of Jammu and Kashmir have experienced fresh snowfall in higher altitudes and rainfall in the plains. The adverse conditions have caused major transport interruptions.

In Kashmir, the heavy snowfall led to the closure of the critical Jammu-Srinagar national highway, a vital land link to the valley. Simultaneously, all flights at Srinagar’s airport were cancelled. This twin disruption has left hundreds of tourists stranded within the region, with no immediate means of departure.

District administrations in affected areas continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasising caution while relief and road clearance operations are underway. The focus remains on ensuring the safety of residents and tourists alike as the weather pattern persists.
