Mumbai was lashed by intense rainfall in the early hours of Monday, with South Mumbai and the Western suburbs bearing the brunt of the downpour. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, warning of further heavy showers and potential flooding in low-lying areas.
According to a TimesNow report, between 2 am and 5 am, Fort recorded the highest rainfall at 74 mm, followed by Bandra (62 mm), Malabar Hill (60 mm) and Lower Parel (58 mm). Other affected areas included Haji Ali (57 mm), Matunga (56 mm), Grant Road and Santacruz (47 mm each), as per a forecaster’s post on X. Even typically drier zones like Andheri (33 mm), Borivali (28 mm) and Mumbai Central (30 mm) saw steady showers.
Meanwhile, neighbouring Thane remained largely dry, though forecasts suggest rain may spread there soon.
The IMD’s seven-day forecast predicts heavy rain to persist on June 16 and 17, particularly in South Mumbai and parts of the Western suburbs. From 18 June onwards, intermittent showers are expected, though no formal warnings have been issued yet.
As per TimesNow, the IMD has placed South Mumbai and parts of the Western suburbs, including Colaba, Fort, Malabar Hill, Bandra, Santacruz and Lower Parel, under close watch due to the risk of intense rainfall and waterlogging. Low-lying areas such as Dadar, Matunga and Haji Ali are also on alert, with authorities warning of possible traffic disruptions and localised flooding.
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to avoid unnecessary travel, with disaster response teams placed on standby. Localised flooding and traffic disruptions have already been reported in several areas, including Dadar (41 mm) and Worli (26 mm).
