Three men allegedly gang-raped a 30-year-old nurse after she accidentally knocked on their hotel room while visiting a friend near the railway station area on Wednesday night in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, reported ToI.
The Vedant Nagar police arrested all three accused on Thursday. They have been identified as Ghanshyam Rathod (27), Rishikesh Chavan (25), and Kiran Rathod (25). Police said the two Rathods work as recovery agents with a bank, while Chavan is an MBA student. The trio have been remanded to police custody for four days.
According to police, the incident took place between 11 pm on Wednesday and 3 am on Thursday. Inspector Pravina Yadav said the accused fled immediately after the crime but was traced within three hours of the complaint using technical and local intelligence inputs.
“The preliminary probe revealed that the three accused are friends and had gathered in the hotel room to drink liquor. The victim mistakenly reached room number 205 instead of 105. They allegedly took advantage of the situation and gang-raped her,” Yadav said.
Police said the survivor is married and has an infant child. She works as a nurse at a private hospital and is the primary breadwinner of her family. Her husband, who was earlier unemployed, recently started working. Facing financial difficulties, the woman had sought monetary help from a friend living in Bhokardan in Jalna district. The friend agreed to help and asked her to meet him at the hotel.
Around 11 pm, the woman stepped out of the hotel room to take a phone call. While returning, she mistakenly went to the second floor and knocked on the wrong room. Inside, she found the three accused drinking and asked for her friend by name. When she was told he was not there and turned to leave, one of the accused allegedly claimed her friend was inside and pulled her into the room.
Police said the door was then locked, and the woman was forced to consume alcohol before being sexually assaulted. Between 3 am and 4 am, she managed to open the door, escape from the room, and raise an alarm. She later approached the Vedant Nagar police station and filed a complaint.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to gang rape, wrongful confinement, and criminal intimidation.
