A 35-year-old woman and her six-year-old daughter were found murdered at their home in southeast Delhi’s Sarita Vihar area late Friday night. Their bodies were discovered stuffed inside a bed storage box. Police have identified a neighbour as the prime suspect and suspect the crime may have been committed in anger after the woman allegedly tried to end a relationship.
According to police, a PCR call was received around 10.30 pm reporting that two bodies had been found at a house in Aali Vihar. A team from the local police station rushed to the spot and found the woman and her daughter lying inside a bed box. The lid of the storage unit had not been fully shut. The bodies were later sent to AIIMS for postmortem.
Initial medical examination did not show visible external injuries. However, the postmortem conducted on Saturday revealed that the cause of death was strangulation and smothering. Police said the final postmortem report is still awaited.
The accused has been identified as Deen Dayal, 35, an accountant who lived in the same building. He has been booked for murder under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said he is currently absconding and teams have been formed to trace and arrest him.
During investigation, police learned that the woman, identified as Jyoti, was allegedly in a relationship with the accused. “Local inquiries suggest that the woman and the accused knew each other well. We suspect that he may have committed the crime after she tried to break off the relationship,” a senior officer said. Investigators believe the accused may have acted out of frustration after his advances were rejected.
The woman’s husband, Sudarshan, who works at a printing press in Okhla, told police that he returned home from work to find the apartment door locked from inside.
When his wife did not respond, he searched for her for nearly two hours and contacted relatives to check if she had gone elsewhere. Later, when his other children returned home crying, he alerted neighbours. Together, they forced the door open and found the dead bodies.
A case has been registered under Sec 103 (1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police teams are conducting raids in the area to apprehend the accused.
