A 23-year-old man lost his life in a road accident in Delhi earlier this month after a speeding SUV, allegedly driven by a minor, hit his motorcycle. The teenager was taken into custody, produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB), and sent to an observation home. He was later granted interim bail to appear for his Class X board examinations.
The accident took place on February 3 near a college in Dwarka’s Sector 11 in New Delhi. Sahil Dhaneshra, 23, was riding his motorcycle to work when a Scorpio N car driven by a 17-year-old boy rammed into him. After hitting Sahil’s bike, the SUV crashed into a parked car. A cab driver involved in the collision was critically injured.
Police said the SUV driver was a minor and did not have a driving licence. A case was registered at Dwarka South police station for rash and negligent driving and causing death due to negligence.
A mother’s grief and anger
Inside her home in Dwarka, Sahil’s mother, Inna Makan, is struggling to cope with the sudden loss of her only son. Medals hang on the walls, and handwritten notes and quotes by Sahil still remain.
On the morning of February 3, Sahil left home as usual for work. Around noon, as Inna was about to call him, she received a call from the police informing her about the accident. She rushed to the spot and found her son lying motionless on the road.
According to her, several people had gathered at the scene, but instead of helping, some were recording videos on their phones. She said an ambulance was present, but Sahil was not immediately taken to the hospital. By the time he was taken for medical treatment, he had already died.
“My son was screaming in pain for 10 minutes. His jacket was torn, and he was in a very bad condition. I could see he was dying there,” she said.
Allegations of reckless driving
Inna also released a video on social media. She alleged that the SUV was being driven at high speed and that the teenager was shooting social media reels at the time of the accident. She claimed the vehicle was being driven on the wrong side of the road and performed a dangerous stunt in front of a bus.
According to her account, Sahil tried to check for space to move his bike as there was an e-rickshaw on one side and a bus on the other. At that moment, the SUV came towards him and crashed into his motorcycle before hitting a parked car. She also alleged that the driver did not apply brakes even after the collision.
She further claimed that there were earlier over-speeding challans against the SUV, but the boy’s father did not stop him from driving. “This is not just an accident. My son died because someone wanted to make fun reels. People think they can do anything on the road because they come from wealthy families,” she said.
A promising life cut short
Sahil Dhaneshra, known as Kabir to his mother, was in the final semester of his BBA course. He had secured admission to a reputed university in Manchester and was planning to move to the UK in September to pursue his master’s degree.
Independent and hardworking, Sahil had handled his university applications on his own. He was also working part-time at an insurance firm to support his education and reduce the financial burden on his mother, a single parent.
Inna says she will continue to fight for justice. “No one is safe on the roads because of people like them. Strict action should be taken so that no other mother has to go through this pain,” she said.
