The suicide of prominent businessman and Confident Group chairman, CJ Roy, has sparked a major investigation, allegations of "tax terrorism" and a political row in Karnataka, with a special investigation team (SIT) now working to reconcile starkly contradictory accounts of his final hours.
Roy, 57, died of a gunshot wound from his licensed pistol inside his private chamber at the group’s Langford Town office on the afternoon of January 30. The incident occurred while a team of income tax officials was present on the premises for what was described as a final scrutiny of documents seized during earlier raids.
Probe itself under scrutiny
The formation of an SIT by the Congress-led state government has itself become a point of contention. State BJP president BY Vijayendra criticised the move as hurried, questioning its timing before the family’s final rites or a formal complaint, according to a TOI report.
Vijayendra insinuated political motives, sarcastically dubbing SIT the "Siddaramaiah Investigation Team" and alleging such probes were used by the ruling party either for protection or suppression.
State ministers, however, defended the decision. Law Minister HK Patil stated that the government’s intent was to quickly ascertain the truth, while Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said the circumstances, including the role of the I-T visit, needed transparent revelation.
Minister Rao also voiced broader concerns, citing public opinion that central agencies were being misused as "political weapons for blackmail, threats and character assassination."
Allegations of "tax terrorism" and a deputy CM's claim
The controversy was amplified when veteran venture capitalist and former Infosys CFO, TV Mohandas Pai, directly appealed to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for an "open, transparent inquiry."
In a post on X, Pai alleged "tax terrorism" by officials, linking Roy’s death to the earlier suicide of Cafe Coffee Day founder VG Siddhartha. He questioned the empowerment of tax officials without adequate citizen protection and demanded data on collections from raids versus voluntary compliance.
These allegations gained traction from a statement by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who claimed Roy had been asked "a lot of questions" by officials before requesting five minutes alone.
The SIT's findings: A web of discrepancies
However, the initial findings of the SIT, as reported by TOI, present a more complex and disputed picture. Investigators have recorded statements from all I-T officials present that day, who asserted they had not questioned Roy.
Their purpose, they said, was limited to obtaining signatures for document verification. Police cautiously noted that while a lack of conversation could not be conclusively confirmed, officials did not restrict Roy’s movements or seize his personal items and were unaware he was carrying a firearm.
The SIT has identified several inconsistencies in the initial complaint filed by TA Joseph, the group’s founding director and managing director. Key discrepancies centre on the timeline. While some staff placed Roy entering his chamber around 2 pm, Joseph’s statement mentioned 3 pm.
Investigators are also reportedly seeking clarity on Roy’s interactions with the I-T team, the precise moments others entered or left the chamber and why no gunshot was reportedly heard, despite the room not being fully soundproof.
Joseph told police he was asked to leave the chamber and, upon trying to re-enter 10 minutes later, was stopped by security on Roy’s instructions. After another 10 minutes, with no response to knocking, the door — locked from inside — was forced open.
A family's grief and unanswered calls
In the midst of the probe, the human tragedy remains. Roy’s son, Rohit, was cited by TOI as saying that he was "lost for words" and still processing events.
The businessman’s brother, CJ Babu, revealed that Roy had called him multiple times on January 30, only to ask when he was returning from Thailand, stating he "needed to talk." Babu confirmed Roy did not discuss the I-T proceedings in these calls.
