Early snowfall hits Ladakh in August, disrupting travel on Khardung La and bringing a magical winter touch to the Suru Summer Festival.

Ladakh experienced its first significant snowfall of the season in August, while moderate rains lashed Kashmir valley on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. Officials reported widespread snowfall in Leh, Kargil, and Drass, signaling an early onset of winter in the high-altitude region.

The higher reaches of Ladakh, including Pensi-la in Zanskar and Khardung La, one of the world’s highest motorable passes, received fresh snow on Monday. Authorities temporarily closed the Khardung La road to ensure safety as slippery, snow-covered stretches made vehicular movement risky.

The snowfall also led to a sharp dip in temperatures across the region, while parts of Leh district received heavy rainfall. According to the Meteorological Centre Ladakh, its observatory at Yourting in Leh recorded 47 mm of rainfall on August 25, the highest for the month since 1973. Meteorologists predict light to moderate snowfall in upper reaches of Ladakh over the next 48 hours.

Advisory for Travelers

Authorities have urged residents and tourists to exercise caution while travelling on hilly roads, especially high-altitude passes. Snow clearance operations are expected to begin once weather conditions improve, and travelers have been advised to avoid Khardung La until further notice.

Khardung La, located at an altitude of over 17,500 feet, is a key route connecting Leh to the Shyok and Nubra valleys. Any disruption at the pass can affect the movement of goods, tourists, and local residents.

Snowfall at Suru Summer Festival

In a surprising turn, the ongoing Suru Summer Festival in Ladakh’s Suru Valley also witnessed snowfall, adding a magical touch to the celebration. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, who was attending the festival, shared his experience on social media platform X, saying: “First time in my life I've seen so much snowfall in August!”

The early snowfall is a reminder of Ladakh’s unpredictable weather and the challenges it poses for high-altitude travel. Residents and tourists are advised to plan journeys carefully, carry warm clothing, and follow official advisories to stay safe.
