Union minister Vijay Goel today visited various bank branches in central Delhi and set up a public support camp to help the citizens with the formalities related to currency exchange.

He spoke to the bank officials in the Paharganj area and suggested opening of more counters for extended hours and urged the public to support the prime minister's decision, saying it would benefit the country and could succeed only with their cooperation.

Goel acknowledged that there were certain initial problems in the aftermath of the Centre demonetising high-value currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, but asserted that the people were cooperating which, he said, was evident from the feedback of many standing in the queues.

"Some political parties are engaging in rumour-mongering in an attempt to misguide the people and deter the process of smooth transition.

"These political leaders who are spreading rumours are worried by the prime minister's growing popularity after the bold decision to ban Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes to curb black money," the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports said.

He also urged the BJP volunteers to set up similar public support camps across Delhi and other regions to help the masses and weaker sections.

Earlier, Goel hailed the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and termed it the second "Swachhata Abhiyan" (clean-up mission) to free the country from corruption and malpractices.

"Those who have stashed black money are blaming the government and misguiding the public, but those leading an honest life are happy with the prime minister's historic decision," he said.
