On May 16, 2008, 14-year-old Aarushi Talwar was found dead at the Talwar's residence. A day later, so was the family's domestic help Hemraj.
The investigation, which lasted till 2011, suggested that the parents - Rajesh and Nupur Talwar - were behind their daughter's and Hemraj's murders.
In 2011, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) pointed fingers at the parents, which resulted in court proceedings against the Talwars that lasted till 2013. In November that year, a special CBI court sentenced the couple to life imprisonment at Ghaziabad's Dasna Jail.
Today, the 9-year old case got a verdict from the Allahabad High Court. Rajesh and Nupur Talwar were not in the courtroom when the verdict was announced, they were watching the proceedings from Dasna Jail.
Here's what you need to know :
#The Allahabad High Court gave the Talwars a clean chit and the couple will be released as soon as the court communicates with Dasna Jail, which could take till Friday.
#The High Court, giving the accused the benefit of doubt, said that there is lack of evidence and the accused can not be convicted based on suspicion.
#The CBI is expected to challenge the acquittal in the Supreme Court; they say that they are waiting for the judgement copy and will accordingly decide their next course of action.
#The killer responsible for the double murder is yet to be identified.
#Another investigation into the matter is likely. However, the particulars of this possible investigation will remain in the dark till a copy of the judgement is available in public domain.
