Tata Motors is accelerating production of the Nexon in the light of mounting pressure to deliver the car whose waiting period has stretched to more than three months.

Launched in September the compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) Nexon faced production constraints and Tata Motors was not able to keep output in line with the demand.

Last two months’ average production of the Nexon stood slightly under 3,000 units a month much lower than the 5500-6000 units a month targeted by the company.

“We accept that we could not ramp up Nexon production in the run-up to the launch of the vehicle and immediately after that. But those issues are getting sorted out now and we will go full speed ahead,” said a senior executive of Tata Motors speaking to Moneycontrol News.

Priced at Rs 5.87 lakh The Nexon is Tata Motors’ answer to Maruti Suzuki’s runaway hit Vitara Brezza and the Ford EcoSport, both of which are called as compact SUVs. Ford gave the Ecosport a mid-life upgrade on Thursday pricing at Rs 7.31 lakh. The Tata Motors car is the most affordable car in its category.

The Mumbai-based company has already amassed unserviced bookings of more than 15,000 units for the Nexon during the last 6 weeks. It is getting nearly 2500 bookings a week which is slightly under the model’s current production rate.

“We are getting 350 bookings for the car every day. And there is a waiting of three months on the car which we are not happy about. We will bring it down as we move forward. We are confident that the Nexon will cross 6,000 units sales (per month) mark easily,” added the executive.

Nexon has emerged as the second highest-selling car for Tata Motors behind Tiago. Together with Tiago the duo make up 60 percent of Tata Motors monthly sales.

The rise in demand for both the cars has pushed Tata Motors to the fourth spot in the passenger vehicle segment from fifth spot earlier beating Honda Cars India. Nexon is available in petrol and diesel engine option across ten variants.
