The Israeli military on Sunday issued a new threat against Iranian leaders, saying it would pursue every successor of Supreme Leader Ali Ayotollah Khamenei.
In a social media post, the military also threatened it would pursue every person who seeks to appoint a successor, referring to the Assembly of Experts---the body charged with choosing the Islamic Republic’s Supreme Leader.
The statement from Israel comes after reports emerged that Iran's Assembly of Experts has more or less reached a majority consensus on who will be Iran's next Supreme Leader and succeed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Earlier on Sunday, US President Donald Trump said he is not interested in negotiating with Iran, raising the possibility that the Iran war would only end once Tehran no longer has a functioning military and its leadership is completely wiped out.
Shortly after Trump spoke to reporters aboard Air Force One, Israel announced fresh strikes across Iran early on Sunday.
On February 28, US and Israel launched a broadwave of airstrikes on Iran, killing Tehran's Supreme Leader Ali Ayotollah Khamenei. His death created a major political shock inside Iran and triggered a leadership crisis.
Following the killing of the Supreme Leader, a temporary Interim Leadership Council took over the leader’s duties and the Assembly of Experts began the process of choosing a new Supreme Leader.
Reports suggest Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of late leader Ali Ayotollah Khamenei, has reportedly emerged as a leading candidate to become the next Supreme Leader. He is also known to have close ties to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
