The social network X will replace the official Iranian flag emoji with the historic lion-and-sun emblem used before Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, a senior product manager said on Friday, signalling a change with clear political overtones.
Nikita Beer, a project manager at X, said the update would soon be available on the web version of the app. He responded to a user query directed at Elon Musk, posting “In progress” and sharing a technical link indicating the change was being implemented.

Symbol with a contested legacy
The lion-and-sun emblem was a state symbol for centuries and featured prominently during the Pahlavi monarchy. It was removed after the 1979 revolution and replaced by the Islamic Republic’s current emblem, which incorporates calligraphic and religious motifs.
Since then, the lion-and-sun has been associated largely with monarchist groups and parts of Iran’s exiled opposition. The symbol has reappeared in recent demonstrations, alongside slogans calling for a return to the monarchy.
Timing amid internet restrictions
The emoji change comes as Iranian authorities have imposed internet access restrictions in several parts of the country, a tactic used in past protests to limit information flows and coordination.
In response to the curbs, Musk announced the free activation of Starlink for Iran, providing satellite-based connectivity independent of terrestrial networks. Starlink is operated by SpaceX.
Access remains constrained
Starlink requires specialized satellite terminals, an electronic dish, router and reliable power supply, to connect to low-Earth orbit satellites. These devices must be physically present in the country and properly configured.
Some social media accounts have claimed that terminals were smuggled into Iran ahead of protests, but these reports have not been independently confirmed. In previous crises, Starlink equipment has reached blackout zones through informal networks and diaspora support.
