US President Donald Trump took a swipe at French President Emmanuel Macron over his choice of eyewear during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, poking fun at the aviator sunglasses Macron wore while addressing delegates.
Macron drew attention earlier this week when he appeared on stage at the WEF wearing blue mirrored aviator-style sunglasses, an unusual choice for an indoor address. He did not explain the reason for wearing the glasses during his speech at the time. Subsequently, the French President’s office said the sunglasses were worn to protect his eyes due to a burst blood vessel.
Trump referenced the moment during his own remarks in Davos on Tuesday, commenting on what he described as Macron’s “beautiful sunglasses” before asking, “what the hell happened?”
The French leader had first been seen wearing the same sunglasses last week during meetings in Paris. Around the same time, Macron appeared at a military event in southern France with a visibly red and irritated eye, which sparked speculation about his health.
Addressing the issue during a New Year’s address to the French military on January 15, Macron sought to downplay concerns. “I must ask you to excuse the unsightly appearance of my eye,” he told the troops.
He added, “It’s something completely harmless. Simply see it as an unintentional nod to the ‘eye of the tiger’ to kick off the year. For those who get the reference, it’s a sign of determination. And it is absolute.”
Macron later clarified that the condition affecting his eye was “totally benign” and “completely insignificant,” according to officials.
