President Donald Trump on Thursday unequivocally referred to an imminent war (mentioned in the the context of escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington) with both sides refusing to cede its ground.

Trump has maintained that “a massive armada” is heading towards Iran and is ready to “fulfil its mission”, adding that time is running out for the Islamic Republic to make a deal on its nuclear programme. In response, Tehran said that if attacked, it would retaliate “like never before”.

“A massive Armada is heading to Iran. It is moving quickly, with great power, enthusiasm, and purpose. It is a larger fleet, headed by the great Aircraft Carrier Abraham Lincoln, than that sent to Venezuela,” Mr. Trump wrote in a social media post on Wednesday (January 28, 2026).

Iranian leaders led by none other than the Vice President said that the country must be ready for war, its first vice president said on Thursday, after the US moved an aircraft carrier to the region and did not rule out military action against Tehran over its deadly protest crackdown.

"Today we must be prepared for a state of war. Our strategy is that we will never start a war, but if it is imposed, we will defend ourselves," First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref said, quoted by the official IRNA news agency. He added that Iran was "ready" for negotiations with the United States but said "this time we want guarantees", without giving further details.
