US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a rare and highly classified briefing at the White House for senior congressional leaders, including members of the so-called “gang of eight.” The select group, comprising top figures from both parties and key intelligence committee leaders, is typically informed only during critical national security moments.

Following the session, Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer underscored the gravity of the situation, stating, “This is serious, and the administration has to make its case to the American people.”

The briefing comes as Washington significantly increases its military footprint in the Middle East. A second aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald Ford, has entered the region, marking the largest concentration of US naval and air power there since the buildup preceding the 2003 Iraq war. Analysts suggest that the US is now positioned to carry out military action against Iran if directed.

At the same time, the US has evacuated non-essential personnel from its embassy in Lebanon due to concerns about the “threat environment,” reflecting rising tensions across the region.

Despite the show of force, diplomatic efforts are still underway. Talks between US and Iranian officials are scheduled to take place in Geneva later this week. Iran has indicated a willingness to move forward quickly, with deputy foreign minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi saying, “We want to do whatever’s necessary to make it happen.”

However, he clarified that discussions would focus solely on Iran’s nuclear activities -- something that may fall short of US expectations, which also include demands on missile development and regional influence.

President Donald Trump has taken a firm position, warning that Iran must either agree to US conditions or face escalation. He recently stated that if negotiations fail, the US may have to “take it a step further,” adding that “really bad things” could happen, while also imposing a 10-day deadline.

The president is expected to highlight Iran prominently in his State of the Union address, signaling its central role in current US foreign policy.

Behind the scenes, there are concerns about the potential consequences of military action. Reports indicate that General Dan Caine, chair of the joint chiefs of staff, cautioned that a conflict could strain US missile defense resources, including Patriot and THAAD systems.

Trump dismissed interpretations suggesting hesitation within the military leadership, asserting, “General Caine, like all of us, would like not to see War but, if a decision is made on going against Iran at a Military level, it is his opinion that it will be something easily won.”

Officials suggest that Trump has yet to make a final decision, with the outcome of the Geneva talks likely to play a decisive role. Options reportedly range from limited strikes aimed at influencing negotiations to a broader campaign targeting Iran’s leadership.

Retired General Charles Wald emphasised the urgency, noting, “We could go now,” while warning that failing to act after drawing a red line could carry significant consequences.
