U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents shot two people in Portland on Thursday afternoon, according to federal and city officials, prompting an FBI investigation and sharp criticism from local leaders.
Portland police said officers were called to Southeast 102nd Avenue and Main Street at about 2:20 p.m., where they confirmed that federal agents were involved in a shooting.
Second scene located minutes later
Police said that at about 2:24 p.m., a man who had been shot called for help near Northeast 146th Avenue and East Burnside Street. Officers responding to that location found a man and a woman with apparent gunshot wounds. Both were taken to hospital.
Portland City Council President Elana Pirtle-Guiney said the two people were believed to be alive, though their conditions were not immediately known.
Federal involvement under investigation
Authorities confirmed that federal agents were involved in the shooting. The Federal Bureau of Investigation said it is investigating the incident.
Portland police said they are assisting federal authorities but are not leading the probe.
The shooting came a day after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis, an incident that has already sparked protests and political fallout.
The back-to-back cases have intensified scrutiny of federal law enforcement operations in US cities as the Trump administration expands its immigration crackdown.
Mayor calls for pause in operations
Portland Mayor Keith Wilson said the city was “grappling with another deeply troubling incident,” adding that federal operations were having deadly consequences.
“We cannot sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts,” Wilson said, calling on ICE to end all operations in Portland until a full investigation is completed.
