US President Donald Trump said he had a constructive conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the war in Ukraine, describing the exchange as encouraging as both leaders addressed ongoing global tensions.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump said the two discussed the prolonged fighting in Ukraine. “We were talking about Ukraine, which is just a never-ending fight,” he said, adding that “I think it was a positive call on that subject.”

The Kremlin also confirmed the discussion, describing the telephone call between the two leaders as “serious and constructive.” According to Russian officials, the conversation lasted about an hour and marked the first direct talks between Trump and Putin since December.

Putin’s diplomatic advisor Yuri Ushakov said the call had been requested by Washington and covered a range of international issues. Among the main topics were the Ukraine conflict and the ongoing war involving Iran.

“The accent was placed on the situation surrounding the conflict with Iran and the bilateral negotiations underway with the representatives of the United States on settling the Ukrainian question,” Ushakov said.

He added that Putin also spoke about the conditions on the battlefield in Ukraine. According to the advisor, the Russian leader offered Trump “a description of the current situation on the line of contact where Russian troops are progressing with a lot of success.”

Ushakov said Putin urged a diplomatic solution to the war involving Iran. The Russian president called for a “quick political and diplomatic settlement” to the US-Israeli conflict with Tehran, a country that has maintained close ties with Moscow.

The advisor also noted that Putin welcomed Trump’s involvement in attempts to ease the Ukraine crisis. Putin “positively evaluated the mediation efforts undertaken” by Trump in the Ukraine conflict, Ushakov said.

Despite several rounds of dialogue between Russian and US officials, as well as discussions that have included Ukrainian representatives, no major progress toward a ceasefire has been achieved.

The latest conversation between the two leaders follows a previous summit held in Alaska in August last year.
