US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a telephone conversation on Wednesday, discussing a broad range of bilateral and global issues, hours after Xi’s virtual meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump described the call as extensive and constructive, saying the two leaders covered key geopolitical and economic matters, including trade, military ties, Taiwan, the Russia-Ukraine war, Iran, and energy cooperation.
“I have just completed an excellent telephone conversation with President Xi of China," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “It was a long and thorough call, where many important subjects were discussed."
"Taiwan, the war between Russia and Ukraine, the current situation with Iran, the purchase of oil and gas by China from the United States, and China’s consideration of buying additional agricultural products, including lifting the soybean count to 20 million tons for the current season (they have committed to 25 million tons for next season!)" Trump said about his call with Xi.
"I believe that there will be many positive results achieved over the next three years of my Presidency having to do with President Xi, and the People’s Republic of China," he added.
According to Trump, the discussion also included his upcoming visit to China in April, China’s potential purchase of additional US agricultural products, and cooperation on airplane engine deliveries.
Trump highlighted the tone of the engagement, stressing the importance of stable ties between the world’s two largest economies.
“The relationship with China, and my personal relationship with President Xi, is an extremely good one, and we both realize how important it is to keep it that way," he said. “I believe that there will be many positive results achieved over the next three years of my presidency having to do with President Xi and the People’s Republic of China."
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV quoted Xi as emphasising dialogue and trust-building between the two nations.
“By tackling issues one by one and continuously building mutual trust, we can forge a right way for the two countries to get along," Xi said.
Calling for a reset in bilateral engagement, Xi added, “Let us make 2026 a year in which China and the United States, as two major countries, move toward mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation."
The conversation comes at a sensitive moment in global geopolitics, with tensions spanning trade, security in the Indo-Pacific, and ongoing conflicts in Europe and the Middle East. Xi’s call with Trump followed his video interaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier the same day, underscoring Beijing’s active diplomatic outreach amid shifting global alignments.
