US President Donald Trump spoke with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte over the phone to discuss Greenland and global security matters. In a Truth Social post, he described the call as “very good” and underlined Greenland’s critical role for both national and global security.
Trump highlighted the United States’ military strength, saying, “We are the only power that can ensure peace throughout the world, and it is done, quite simply, through strength.” He added that rebuilding the military, which began in his first term, continues at an accelerated pace.
On Greenland specifically, Trump said, “Greenland is imperative for National and World Security. There can be no going back, On that, everyone agrees!” He also confirmed plans to meet various parties at Davos, Switzerland.
Trump also posted an image on Truth Social portraying Greenland as “US territory.” The image features Trump with JD Vance and Marco Rubio, shown placing a US flag on the Arctic island.
This comes ahead of Trump’s scheduled speech on January 21 at the World Economic Forum in Davos 2026, which will take place amid disputes over Greenland tariffs and the proposed Gaza Peace Board. He is expected to lead the largest-ever US delegation to Davos, comprising over 60 heads of state and government and nearly 850 CEOs and chairs of the world’s top companies.
