Professor Jiang Xueqin, a Beijing based historian and host of the popular YouTube channel Predictive History, has attracted widespread attention online after several bold forecasts he made in 2024 appear to be unfolding in real time amid the intensifying conflict between the United States and Iran.
Bold predictions that caught attention
Jiang, who teaches history and philosophy and uses structural historical analysis and game theory to interpret global affairs, made three major geopolitical predictions in a May 2024 lecture: that Donald Trump would win the US presidency again, that a war between the US and Iran would follow, and that the United States would ultimately lose that war. Two of these predictions - Trump's return to power and the onset of conflict with Iran - have already come to pass, leading some social media users to dub him "China's Nostradamus."
Logic behind the forecasts
In his lecture, Jiang argued that a re-elected Trump administration would be drawn into armed confrontation with Iran, partly because of overlapping strategic interests among the US, Israel and regional actors. He warned that such a conflict could have disastrous consequences for the United States, drawing historical parallels to ancient military blunders such as the Sicilian Expedition in the Peloponnesian War.
Iran's strategic advantages
Jiang has also suggested that Iran's preparation over many years could give it strategic advantages in a prolonged conflict, even as US forces press military actions in the region. His views were further discussed during an interview on Breaking Points, where he argued that Iran has "many more advantages" over the United States in a sustained war of attrition.
Using history to predict the future
Through his Predictive History channel, which has grown rapidly in popularity as geopolitical tensions rise, Jiang applies historical patterns, analogies, and game theoretic reasoning to forecast global events, a method that has sparked both fascination and debate online.
