Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Saudi Arabia next week at the invitation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, with official engagements scheduled for April 22 and 23 in Jeddah.
This will be his first visit to the Kingdom during his third term as Prime Minister, marking a significant milestone in the growing relationship between the two nations, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
"Saudi Arabia is a leading voice in the Islamic world and is increasingly playing an important role in regional developments," said Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s will be held in city of Jeddah. During his visit, the Prime Minister is set to hold a one-on-one meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, including a ceremonial welcome and bilateral talks to further strengthen the relationship between the two nations according to MEA.
"You're also aware that the Prime Minister share a very close personal relationship with a lot of warmth and respect for each other, and the bilateral relationship has gained a lot from strategic guidance at the top most level, and there has been significant momentum also in this relationship in recent years," he said, referring to the relations between Prime Minister Modi and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
"The visit is also likely to see conclusion of several MoUs between the two sides - some of these are in the final stage of approvals and brushing up, and we will have more details to release during the course of the visit," Misri said.
PM Modi has previously visited Saudi Arabia twice, in 2016 and 2019. This upcoming trip comes after Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s state visit to New Delhi in September 2023, where he attended the G20 Summit and co-chaired the inaugural meeting of the India-Saudi Arabia Strategic Partnership Council.
Russia-Ukraine war will be a “significant area of discussion” during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, highlighting India’s consistent call for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict.
“The Prime Minister had articulated India’s position about the need for dialogue to address and resolve this issue — for the principal protagonists to sit around a table and find solutions,” Misri said. “We are glad to see some of that happening, and it’s good that a partner such as Saudi Arabia is involved in this exercise again.”
While Misri declined to prejudge the nature of the upcoming discussions, he confirmed that the conflict will feature prominently in talks between PM Modi and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia will be a crucial opportunity to discuss key regional and global issues, including maritime security and the situation in West Asia.
Highlighting concerns over Houthi attacks on commercial shipping, MEA noted that India has been closely monitoring developments and that the Indian Navy has taken significant steps to safeguard merchant vessels and seafarers.
Misri also pointed to ongoing tensions in West Asia, particularly between Israel and Palestine, and emphasized Saudi Arabia’s vital role in addressing the crisis. “India has remained actively engaged with all principal actors, and this visit offers a valuable chance to coordinate with a key regional player,” he added.
