As global attention remains fixed on the dramatic collapse of Venezuela’s long-time strongman, a lesser-known chapter from Nicolas Maduro’s personal life has returned to focus: his deep spiritual connection with India.
Long before international sanctions, political repression and criminal charges, Maduro developed a bond rooted in devotion to Indian spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba. That association, formed during his early years in public life, followed him from diplomacy into the presidency and remained visible even at the height of his power, according to a report by The Sunday Guardian.
A spiritual visit before power
In 2005, years before assuming Venezuela’s top office, Maduro travelled to India in a personal capacity while serving as the country’s Foreign Minister. The visit was not linked to official diplomacy. Instead, Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, journeyed to Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh, home to the Prasanthi Nilayam ashram founded by Sathya Sai Baba.
According to accounts cited by The Sunday Guardian, the couple received a private audience with the spiritual leader. Photographs from the visit show Maduro seated on the floor in traditional Indian posture, listening in silence during the interaction.
Sai Baba’s presence inside the palace
After Maduro rose to power, his spiritual beliefs did not disappear from public view. Visitors to the Miraflores Palace in Caracas reportedly noticed a large framed photograph of Sathya Sai Baba displayed prominently in Maduro’s private office.
Placed alongside portraits of Simón Bolívar and Hugo Chávez, the image remained for years, even as key political and economic decisions shaping Venezuela were taken within those walls, The Sunday Guardian reported.
Cilia Flores and the spiritual bond
The report notes that the spiritual connection may have begun with Cilia Flores, often described as the most powerful woman in the regime. Flores was said to be a follower of Sai Baba even before Maduro adopted the teachings.
During periods of political turmoil, including coup attempts and widespread protests, Flores reportedly encouraged Maduro to draw strength from Sai Baba’s messages on destiny, patience and endurance. Over time, the belief system became a shared family faith, even as international scrutiny of the regime intensified.
A rare moment of national mourning
When Sathya Sai Baba died in April 2011, Venezuela took an unusual step among Latin American nations. Under Maduro’s influence as Foreign Minister, the National Assembly passed an official condolence resolution and declared a day of national mourning.
The resolution formally acknowledged the guru’s “spiritual contribution to humanity.” According to The Sunday Guardian, no other country in the region issued a similar tribute, underlining the depth of Maduro’s personal connection.
One of Maduro’s last spiritual statements
On November 23, 2025, just weeks before the collapse of his regime, Maduro marked the centenary of Sathya Sai Baba with an official public statement.
“I always remember him when we met… May the wisdom of this great teacher continue to enlighten us,” Maduro said, describing the guru as a “being of light.” The statement became one of his last public messages unrelated to politics, The Sunday Guardian noted.
Sai Baba organisations under Maduro
During Maduro’s presidency, Sathya Sai organisations were allowed to operate freely in Venezuela, even as many foreign non-governmental organisations faced restrictions or expulsion.
Sai Baba centres ran schools and the Institute of Human Values, expanding their footprint across the country. Venezuela today hosts one of the largest Sai Baba devotee communities in Latin America, with roots tracing back to 1974, according to the report.
A contradiction under scrutiny
The renewed attention on Maduro’s spiritual past highlights a stark contradiction. Sathya Sai Baba’s teachings emphasised Sathya, or truth, Dharma, or righteousness, and Ahimsa, or non-violence.
Maduro now faces serious allegations linked to repression, violence and narco-terrorism. As legal proceedings move forward, observers are questioning whether spirituality was a genuine guiding force in his life, or merely a symbolic shield during years of unchecked power, The Sunday Guardian reported.
