Russia and Iran have stepped up diplomatic coordination as tensions continue to rise in the Middle East following the ongoing conflict involving Tehran, the United States and Israel. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi to discuss the rapidly evolving situation in the region, according to Moscow.
The conversation comes as fighting continues to intensify and regional governments remain on high alert. Russia has maintained close diplomatic engagement with Iran throughout the crisis, reflecting the growing strategic relationship between the two countries.
Iran rejects calls for ceasefire
Even as international voices call for de-escalation, Iran has signalled that it is not ready to halt its military response.
In an interview with NBC, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected calls for an immediate ceasefire and said Iran would continue its operations.
Iran needs “to continue fighting for the sake of our people,” Araghchi said during the interview. He also accused the United States and Israel of targeting civilians and critical infrastructure in Iran.
His remarks indicate that Tehran intends to maintain its current military posture despite growing pressure from the international community to de-escalate the conflict.
Iran acknowledges cooperation with Russia
During the interview, Araghchi also addressed reports about possible intelligence cooperation between Moscow and Tehran.
Responding to claims that Russia may be sharing intelligence about US military positions in the region, the Iranian foreign minister said that collaboration between the two countries “is not something new.”
He added that Russia has been assisting Iran “in many different directions,” although he did not provide further details about the nature of the cooperation.
Russia and Iran have steadily strengthened ties over the past few years, particularly in areas related to defence, energy and regional security.
Why the growing Russia–Iran ties worry Washington
The expanding coordination between Moscow and Tehran has raised concerns among Western governments, particularly the United States.
American officials have warned that closer strategic cooperation between the two countries could complicate the regional security situation and potentially prolong the conflict.
US officials have described the relationship between Russia and Iran as “symbiotic,” highlighting concerns that the partnership could deepen as both countries face pressure from the West.
At the same time, US officials have argued that any assistance provided by Moscow so far has not significantly changed the battlefield dynamics.
Nevertheless, Washington continues to monitor the relationship closely as the war unfolds.
Iran attempts to reassure Gulf neighbours
While continuing its military campaign, Iranian leaders have also attempted to calm concerns among neighbouring Gulf countries that have been caught in the crossfire of the conflict.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran does not intend to target neighbouring states unless they allow their territory to be used for attacks by the United States or Israel.
He also issued an apology to civilians in neighbouring countries who were affected by recent Iranian strikes.
Araghchi echoed that position, saying Iran’s military operations are aimed specifically at American military assets in the region.
He noted that several US military bases are located on the territory of Gulf states, which explains why Iranian strikes have occurred in those areas.
As the conflict continues to expand, the growing diplomatic coordination between Russia and Iran and the reactions it is triggering in Washington highlight how the crisis is rapidly evolving into a wider geopolitical contest.
