Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has called on US President Donald Trump to “stop the threats” regarding the possibility of the United States taking control of Greenland, the Arctic territory that forms part of the Danish kingdom, the BBC reported.

“It makes absolutely no sense to talk about the need for the United States to take over Greenland,” Frederiksen said, adding: “The US has no right to annex any of the three nations in the Danish kingdom.”

The remarks follow a social media post by rightwing podcaster Katie Miller, wife of Trump aide Stephen Miller, who shared a map of Greenland draped in the US flag with the caption: “SOON.” Trump has repeatedly suggested Greenland could become part of the United States, citing its strategic location and mineral resources.

In a statement published on the Danish government website, Frederiksen said she was addressing the US “very directly.” She emphasized that Denmark and Greenland are members of NATO, covered by the alliance’s collective security guarantee.

Frederiksen also noted the longstanding defense agreement with the United States that provides American forces extensive access to Greenland. She highlighted Denmark’s increased investment in Arctic security, reinforcing that Greenland is already integrated into the alliance’s defense framework.

“I must say this very clearly to the United States: It makes absolutely no sense to speak of any necessity for the United States to take over Greenland. The United States has no legal basis to annex one of the three countries of the Kingdom of Denmark,” Frederiksen said.

Trump’s recent move to detain Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has intensified concerns in Denmark and Greenland about America’s broader military ambitions. The Premier of Greenland, Jens Frederik Nielsen, also reacted, stating that Miller’s social media post “changes nothing whatsoever.”

Frederiksen urged Washington to respect the sovereignty of the Danish kingdom and its people, adding: “I therefore strongly urge the United States to cease its threats against a historically close ally, and against another country and another people who have stated very clearly that they are not for sale.”

In response, Danish officials reiterated the cooperative security relationship with the United States. Sorensen, a Danish government representative, noted: “Just a friendly reminder about the US and the Kingdom of Denmark: We are close allies and should continue to work together as such. US security is also Greenland’s and Denmark’s security. Greenland is already part of NATO. The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States work together to ensure security in the Arctic.”

Frederiksen’s firm stance underscores Denmark’s insistence that Greenland’s sovereignty is non-negotiable and that NATO commitments already ensure US access and protection in the Arctic region.
