Iran on Saturday condemned what it described as a US military attack on Venezuela, following accusations by Caracas that Washington was behind explosions that struck the capital and several other regions.
In a statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said it “strongly condemns the American military attack on Venezuela and the flagrant violation of the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country,” calling the alleged action a breach of international law and the United Nations Charter, particularly Article 2, paragraph 4, which prohibits the use of force.
The ministry described the attack as an example of “aggressive action” that should be explicitly condemned by the United Nations and all states committed to peace, international security, and the rule of law. It warned that military intervention against an independent UN member state poses serious risks to regional and global stability and further undermines the UN Charter–based international order.
Iran also reaffirmed Venezuela’s right to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and self-determination, while stressing the responsibility of the international community—especially the UN and its Security Council—to halt what it called unlawful US aggression and ensure accountability.
Venezuela’s government said the United States attacked civilian and military installations in Caracas and the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira, rejecting what it described as “military aggression.” President Nicolas Maduro’s administration declared a national emergency following the incidents, which came after months of heightened tensions between Washington and Caracas over US accusations of drug trafficking that Maduro has denied.
