An Indian-origin man died of a suspected cardiac arrest after he did not get any adequate treatment for hours together at a Canadian hospital.
44-year-old Prashant Sreekumar was taken to Grey Nuns Community Hospital in Edmonton after he complained of severe chest pain while he was working. This happened on December 22.
But for more than eight hours, Sreekumar was kept in the hospital's Emergency Room waiting area, Global News reported. His father said that he told him, "Papa, I cannot bear the pain."
The father said that he told the hospital staff that his son was in severe pain and then the hospital staff did an ECG on him. However, the family was told that the ECG did not show anything of significance and the patient was kept waiting.
Sreekumar was then given some Tylenol for his pain but his blood pressure kept rising, news reports said.
The father said that the blood pressure was "through the roof" and his son was called to the treatment area after eight hours of waiting.
"After sitting maybe 10 seconds, he looked at me, he got up and put his hand on his chest and just crashed," the father said.
Prashant is survived by his wife and three kids who are three, 10 and 14 years old.
The Government Healthcare Network, which manages the hospital, has reportedly declined to comment on specific patient care details but confirmed the case is currently under review by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
"We offer our sympathy to the patient's family and friends. There is nothing more important than the safety and care of our patients and staff," the statement read, as reported by Global News.
