Niagara Falls transforms into icy spectacle

A severe polar vortex has turned Niagara Falls into a dramatic winter spectacle, as plunging temperatures caused the mist rising from the waterfalls to freeze into ice.

Videos shared online show heavy ice build-up along cliffs and riverbanks after temperatures dropped below 20 degrees Celsius. Even in the extreme cold, torrents of water continued to crash over the falls, throwing thick clouds of mist into the air.

In the sub-zero conditions, the mist rapidly freezes on contact, blanketing nearby surfaces in ice and creating striking winter imagery. Sections of the Niagara River also appear partially frozen, with large ice sheets visible close to the brink of the falls. In some footage, a faint rainbow can be seen cutting through the icy mist.
