A UK inquest has heard that a 23-year-old British woman was shot dead by her father at his home in Texas after an argument over Donald Trump and American politics.
Lucy Harrison, from Warrington, Cheshire, had travelled to the United States with her boyfriend, Sam Littler, to visit her father, Kris Harrison, at his residence in Prosper, near Dallas. The fatal shooting occurred on January 10, 2025, just hours before the couple were scheduled to fly back to the UK.
Testifying before the court, Littler said Lucy and her father had a strained relationship and frequently disagreed, particularly about his decision to own a firearm. On the morning of the incident, as they were preparing to leave for the airport, tensions escalated into what he described as a “big” argument centred on Donald Trump, who was due to be sworn in for a second presidential term.
“Kris and Lucy ended up having quite a big argument which led to Lucy running upstairs and being upset,” Littler told the inquest.
During the confrontation, Lucy asked her father how he would react if she were sexually assaulted. According to the evidence presented, Harrison responded that he had two other daughters and it “would not upset him that much”.
Littler said that roughly 30 minutes later, Harrison took Lucy by the hand and guided her into his ground-floor bedroom. Within about 15 seconds, Littler heard a loud bang, followed by Harrison calling out to his wife, Heather. When he entered the room, he found Lucy lying on the floor near the bathroom entrance.
The court was told that Lucy died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Lucy worked as a fashion buyer for Boohoo. Her mother, Jane Coates, described her as a “real force of life” who was passionate about social causes and enjoyed engaging in debate.
The inquest also heard that Kris Harrison had previously undergone treatment for alcohol addiction. He did not attend the proceedings, and his legal representative argued that the hearing had taken on the tone of a criminal investigation rather than serving as a fact-finding inquiry.
Authorities in Prosper examined the case as a potential manslaughter. However, a grand jury in Collin County chose not to indict Kris Harrison, and no charges were filed in the United States.
