The University of Michigan football programme was jolted this week by the abrupt firing of head coach Sherrone Moore, followed within hours by his arrest and, days later, criminal charges. Moore, who had taken over from Jim Harbaugh and led the Wolverines through two high-profile seasons, now faces a felony charge and multiple misdemeanours linked to an alleged incident involving a former staff member, according to CNN.

University officials moved swiftly. Interim president Domenico Grasso said Moore was terminated immediately after investigators presented findings of an “inappropriate relationship,” stressing that the university has “absolutely no tolerance” for such conduct.

Moore became Michigan’s head coach in 2024 after six years on the offensive staff under Harbaugh. In 2023, he twice served as acting head coach during Harbaugh’s suspensions, including for the Connor Stalions sign-stealing scandal. Moore led Michigan to key victories, most notably over Ohio State, and was widely credited with helping stabilise the programme during a turbulent period.

After Harbaugh departed for the NFL, Moore’s promotion was historic. He became the first Black head coach in Michigan football history and capped his first full season by upsetting Ohio State again and defeating Alabama in a bowl game.

Michigan said a university investigation uncovered “credible evidence” that Moore was engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, in violation of university policy. Moore, who is married and has three daughters, was fired with cause.

According to a source familiar with the matter, the university has retained the law firm Jenner and Block to conduct an external review of both Moore’s alleged conduct and the school’s response. The investigation was reportedly triggered by an anonymous tip received in October. University officials have declined to comment further, citing personnel matters.

Hours after his dismissal, Moore was detained by law enforcement and booked into the Washtenaw County Jail. On Friday, prosecutors charged him with third-degree home invasion, a felony, along with misdemeanour counts of stalking and illegal entry.

In court, prosecutor Kati Rezmierski alleged that Moore went to the home of the woman after their relationship ended and after she had disclosed it to university officials. Rezmierski said Moore forced his way into the apartment, retrieved knives and scissors from a kitchen drawer, and made what she described as “terrifying” threats, including threatening to kill himself. She told the court that the woman was “terrorized” by the encounter.

Moore has pleaded not guilty through his attorney. His lawyer, Joe Simon, said he had not yet reviewed the full evidence and declined to comment on the allegations, but argued Moore was not a flight risk or a danger to the public.

Moore was released on a $25,000 bond and placed under strict conditions. He is barred from leaving Michigan, must wear a GPS tether, continue mental health treatment and have no contact with the alleged victim. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 22. Police have said the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges are possible.

Michigan named Biff Poggi as interim head coach as the programme enters a critical period. The dismissal comes amid an already volatile college football coaching cycle, with many top candidates across the country having recently signed extensions.

Athletic director Warde Manuel now faces pressure to stabilise the programme quickly, particularly with the transfer portal opening soon and Michigan scheduled to play Texas in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve. Moore finished the season with a 9–3 record, leaving behind a roster and recruiting pipeline now overshadowed by uncertainty.

Grasso called Moore’s conduct a “breach of trust” and said the university’s actions reflected its commitment to accountability and integrity. The case has also drawn attention to Michigan’s handling of misconduct allegations in athletics, with the board of regents reportedly discussing the situation in recent days.

For a programme still riding the afterglow of a national title and marquee wins, the sudden collapse of Moore’s tenure marks a sobering moment, one that extends far beyond the football field and into the courts and university governance.
