Amid the escalating tension in the Israel-Iran war, US President Donald Trump said the UK is giving "serious thought" to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East, but added US will not need Britain's help to win the war with Iran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, "The United Kingdom, our once Great Ally, maybe the Greatest of them all, is finally giving serious thought to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East. That’s OK, Prime Minister Starmer, we don’t need them any longer — But we will remember. We don’t need people that join Wars after we’ve already won!"
According to a report in the news agency Reuters, the social media post comes after the British Ministry of Defence said on Saturday it was preparing the Prince of Wales aircraft carrier for possible deployment.
Initially, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer had refused to allow US to use British military bases for the first strikes on Iran. Starmer had defended his decision not to permit US forces to use British bases for the initial strikes on Iran, saying he needed to be assured that any military action was both lawful and properly planned.
The UK later allowed US forces to use bases such as RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia for limited defensive operations, but Trump said the delay damaged trust.
After the Israel-Iran war intensified, UK began considering sending naval forces, including an aircraft carrier group. However, Trump mocked Britain saying the decision came “after we’ve already won.”
The Israel-Iran war entered its ninth day on Sunday, with both sides doubling down attacks. The Israel Defence Force (IDF) attacked significant oil resources in Tehran, which it considered were directly connected to Iran’s military industrial complex. In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) launched attacks on a refinery in Israel’s Haifa.
Trump said he is not interested in negotiating with Iran and scotched notions that the war would only end once Iran no longer has a functioning military or any remaining leadership in power.
