When a Chinese developer built an app called “Are You Dead?”, he wasn’t trying to be provocative or clever. He just wanted something simple that could check in on people who live alone. The app cost about 1,000 yuan to make, roughly Rs 13,000. Today, after going viral across China, it is reportedly valued at around 10 million yuan, or close to Rs 13 crore.

The app does almost nothing, and that is exactly why people like it.

Once installed, it asks users to confirm they are okay every couple of days. If they don’t respond, the app alerts a pre-selected contact. There are no feeds to scroll, no likes to chase and no daily notifications demanding attention. It just sits quietly in the background, waiting for a simple tap.

Known in Chinese as “Sile Me”, the app has found an audience among young professionals living alone in cities, as well as older users whose families live far away. China has seen a sharp rise in single-person households in recent years, driven by urban migration, long working hours and delayed marriage. For many, living alone also means being unseen.

That is where the app seems to strike a nerve. Users posting about it online say it feels less like a safety tool and more like reassurance. One user wrote that the reminder felt like “someone knocking gently on the door”, not to intrude, but to check in.

The app’s popularity took off after social media users began sharing screenshots and personal stories. Some talked about how it gave their parents peace of mind. Others said it helped them feel less anxious during long stretches of isolation. The blunt name, which initially raised eyebrows, became part of its appeal. It was honest, even a little dark, but not pretending to be something it wasn’t.

Despite its rising valuation, the app has remained low-key. It earns money through small subscription fees for additional features like custom check-in schedules and multiple emergency contacts. There is no aggressive advertising push and no attempt to turn it into a social platform.

Its success says less about clever tech and more about the moment we are living in. In crowded cities where many people still feel alone, a simple question asked at the right time can matter more than the most sophisticated algorithm.
