Another Hindu youth has been killed in Bangladesh, marking the sixth fatal attack on members of the minority community in just 18 days amid continuing unrest across the country.
The victim, a grocery trader identified as Mani Chakraborty, was murdered on Monday night at Charsindur Bazar in Palash Upazila of Narsingdi district, located on the outskirts of Dhaka.
According to local sources, Chakraborty was attacked by unidentified assailants while running his shop at the busy marketplace. He sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital by locals, but died either on the way or shortly after admission.
Chakraborty, also known as Sarat Chakraborty Mani, was around 40 years old and hailed from Sadharchar Union in Shibpur Upazila. He was the son of Madan Thakur and was described by traders in the area as a quiet and well-known businessman with no known disputes. His killing in a public market has intensified fear among minority communities, many of whom say they now feel unsafe carrying out their daily activities.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers used sharp weapons and fled the scene immediately after the assault. Residents who requested anonymity said Chakraborty was targeted suddenly while attending to customers at his shop. Locals attempted to save him, but he succumbed to his injuries before receiving medical treatment.
Family members said Chakraborty lived a simple life and had no personal enmities. He had previously worked in South Korea before returning to Bangladesh a few years ago. After his return, he built a house in the Brahmandi area of Narsingdi town, where he lived with his wife, Antara Mukherjee, a homemaker, and their 12-year-old son, Abhik Chakraborty.
A family member, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Chakraborty had been deeply worried about the deteriorating situation in the country. On December 19, he wrote in a Facebook post: “So much fire everywhere, so much violence. My birthplace has turned into a valley of death…”
The killing came on the same day another member of the Hindu community, journalist Rana Pratap Bairagi (38), was shot and had his throat slit in Manirampur, Jessore, in what residents alleged was an attack by extremist elements.
Reacting to the latest incident, social activist and organiser Bappaditya Basu said, “before the blood of one Hindu in Bangladesh has even dried, another Hindu is being killed. Before the news of Rana Pratap of Jessore could fade, Sarat Chakraborty Mani of Narsingdi was murdered”. He warned that if such attacks continue, “there will be no existence of Hindus left in Bangladesh within a few years”.
Authorities have yet to announce any arrests in the Narsingdi killing. Investigations are ongoing.
